An online “code of conduct” aimed at fighting hate speech has been launched by the European Union in conjunction with four of the world’s biggest internet companies. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft have all been involved in the creation of the code, which is particularly aimed at fighting racism and xenophobia across Europe. Chris Green is a tech journalist and consultant, and he looked at the rules.

Should we have been surprised to learn this week that the US nuclear weapons force still uses a 1970s-era computer system -- complete with 8-inch floppy disks. Younger listeners may not even know that a floppy is a 1970s- era magnetic storage medium -- a thin disc sealed in a rectangular plastic carrier which you stuck in your computer. Anyway, the very idea that mission- critical ballistic missiles and nuclear bombers were being run on an old IBM computer, got us thinking about how much ancient computer technology is still in daily use out there. Businesses are not taking cyber security seriously enough, the Institute of Directors (IoD) has warned, with under a third of cyber-attacks being reported to the police. In a new report supported by Barclays, named: ‘Cyber Security: Underpinning the Digital Economy’, the IoD revealed that companies were keeping quiet even though half of attacks resulted in interruption of business operations. Professor Richard Benham is author of the report, and he discussed the digital economy.

BT seems to have escaped the immediate threat of selling off its wholesale arm, but it faces a stricter regulatory straitjacket under wide-ranging proposals which would allow other operators to lay fibre optic lines alongside its network.
