It's predicted cyber criminals are going to shift towards hacking into our internet-connected gadgets like phones, smart TVs, and even fitness trackers, and disabling access unless we pay up. Government-backed security researchers are warning about the rise of so-called "ransomware" - which is used to lock users out of devices. Amongst the spending pledges made by the Chancellor in this year's Budget we've heard millions will be set aside for research into futuristic technologies such as biotech, driverless cars and robotics. Money will also be put into a 5G network and supporting education in the STEM industries- science, technology, engineering and mathematics- with funding for 1,000 new PhD and fellowship positions. Carrying out financial transactions on your desktop and other such traditional methods are more susceptible to cybercrime than using your mobile. That’s according to research by security technology company Threatmetrix, which shows one million cyberattacks targeted online lending transactions in 2016. Cyber fraud expert from Threatmetrix, Dr. Stephen Moody, spoke to Share Radio’s Anviksha Patel to discuss the research further.
